Shawn Kumar Sen
Biography
Shawn Kumar Sen, M.D., is Director of the Cardiovascular NICU at Rady Children's Health Orange County and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Irvine. Sen received his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and completed a pediatric residency at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, followed by fellowship training in neonatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and pediatric cardiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He holds board certifications in pediatrics, neonatal-perinatal medicine, and pediatric cardiology.
At Rady Children's Health Orange County, Sen developed the Infant Cardiac Critical Care Program (IC3) for infants with critical congenital heart disease and serves as faculty lead for the Cardiac High-Risk Interstage Program (CHIP), which oversees care for infants with single ventricle physiology and other complex cardiac conditions. He also established the hospital's first cardiac inpatient developmental team, Supporting Heart Infant Neuroprotection and Enrichment (SHINE), which promotes family-centered initiatives to support the developmental needs of neonates and infants undergoing cardiac surgery. His clinical and research work focuses on the intersection of neonatology and pediatric cardiology, particularly in the care of infants with congenital heart disease.
Sen has received the David G. Nathan Basic Science Research National Award and serves on the editorial board of AAP NeoReviewsPlus. He has mentored numerous fellows and faculty members in research, quality improvement, and curriculum development, and has contributed to national efforts in neonatal cardiac care through his work with the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society and the Children's Hospital Neonatal Consortium.
