Mohammad Shafie
Biography
Mohammad "Mo" Shafie, MD, PhD, FAHA, is Associate Clinical Professor and Director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He also serves as Associate Director of the UCI Health Comprehensive Stroke and Cerebrovascular Center. Shafie earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville before completing his M.D. at Virginia Commonwealth University. Following neurology residency training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident, he completed a Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Shafie's clinical research focuses on acute stroke treatment and cerebrovascular disease. He serves as site principal investigator for multiple NIH StrokeNET trials and industry-sponsored studies investigating novel anticoagulants and neuroprotective strategies in stroke. His translational research has explored innovative approaches to thrombolysis, including erythrocyte-derived nanoparticles and microneedle technology for drug delivery. He has published research on stroke treatment protocols, intracerebral hemorrhage, and the impact of methamphetamine use on cerebrovascular outcomes.
Shafie is a Fellow of the American Heart Association and served on the Board of Directors for the AHA/ASA Orange County Chapter from 2017 to 2024. He has developed simulation-based training programs for stroke evaluation and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple neurology journals. His mentorship of vascular neurology fellows and neurology residents has resulted in numerous publications and research presentations, with several mentees receiving awards for outstanding research presentations at departmental research days.
