Biography
Shiu-Yi Emily Chen, M.D., is Division Chief of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. She received her M.D. from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed her anesthesiology residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Chen is board certified in both anesthesiology and pediatric anesthesiology.
Chen's clinical and research interests focus on pediatric acute pain management and regional anesthesia, pain management in pediatric burn patients, and pediatric difficult airway. She has served as principal investigator on studies examining opioid-sparing pain regimens in pediatric burn patients and as sub-principal investigator on research comparing intubation practices in infants between the NICU and operating room. Her work has been published in journals including Anesthesia & Analgesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, and the Journal of Clinical Anesthesia, and she serves as a peer reviewer for multiple anesthesiology journals.
As Division Chief, Chen has led initiatives to improve pediatric care delivery and safety at UCI Health, including evaluating new products, updating difficult airway and trauma carts, and expanding pediatric anesthesia service lines across multiple facilities. She serves as Co-Chair of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia Pediatric Ambulatory Anesthesia Special Interest Group and is a member of the Pediatric Anesthesia Leadership Council. Chen has received the Marilyn Patterson Champion of Care Award from UCI Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care in 2023 and 2025, and has been nominated as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association annually from 2021 to 2025.
