Shakira S. Khoury

Biography

Shakira S. Khoury, M.D., FRCPC, is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of California, Irvine. She received her medical degree from Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, graduating with honors in the top 10th percentile of her class. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Toronto and a clinical fellowship at the University of Calgary, where she became board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1987.

Khoury has held several administrative positions throughout her career, including Medical Director of the Rehab Medicine Center in Toronto from 1994 to 2008 and Vice President of Medical Staff at Lyndhurst Hospital, University of Toronto, from 1991 to 1992. At the University of Calgary, she established the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program and chaired the Orthotic, Prosthetic and Seating Clinics at Calgary General Hospital. She has also served as an independent assessor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for various Canadian organizations, including the Work Safety & Insurance Board, Canada Post, and Canada Pension Plan Programs.

Since joining UC Irvine in 2009, Khoury has served as PMR Rotation Director for Anesthesia Pain Fellows since 2015 and has been active in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows across multiple specialties. She has contributed to clinical research through case reports and presentations at national conferences, focusing on musculoskeletal conditions, pain management, and rehabilitation. Khoury serves on the Merits and Promotion Committee for the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Department of Neurological Surgery, and is a faculty interviewer for both medical school admissions and residency candidates.
