Sang-Woo Jun
Biography
Sang-Woo Jun, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2018, where his dissertation focused on big data analytics using hardware-accelerated flash storage. His research centers on application-specific hardware acceleration using FPGAs and flash storage systems, with particular emphasis on out-of-core analytic systems and distributed flash storage with in-storage accelerators.
Jun's work on external graph analytics using accelerated flash storage was selected for the ISCA@50 25-Year Retrospective, recognizing it as one of approximately 100 of the most memorable papers from the past 25 years of the International Symposium on Computer Architecture. He received the Stamatis Vassiliadis Memorial Award for the most outstanding paper in Architecture and Applications at FPL'21. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Samsung Electronics, Silicon Research Corporation, and VMWare, with funding totaling over $2.5 million as principal investigator.
Jun has published over 30 peer-reviewed conference papers at venues including ISCA, MICRO, VLDB, and FCCM, along with journal articles in ACM Transactions on Computer Systems and ACM Transactions on Reconfigurable Technology and Systems. He serves on program committees for ACM/IEEE ISCA, IEEE HPCA, ACM/SIGDA FPGA, and IEEE/ACM MICRO, among others. Prior to his academic career, Jun worked as a software engineer at Nexon Inc. and held internships at Oracle, EMC, and Quanta Computers.
