Biography
Viviane Mahieux, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Irvine. She received her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from Harvard University in 2004. Her research focuses on cultures and literatures of Mexico, with particular attention to the chronicle and essay in the 19th and 20th centuries, journalism and media theory, and Latin American feminisms.
Mahieux is the author of "Urban Chroniclers in Modern Latin America: The Shared Intimacy of Everyday Life" (University of Texas Press, 2011), which examines the urban chronicle as a literary form across Latin America. She has co-edited several volumes, including "Las culturas de la prensa en México: 1880-1940" (UNAM, 2022) with Yanna Hadatty Mora, "El affair Moreno: Ensayos en torno a María Moreno" (Editorial Mansalva, 2020), and "Tierras de nadie: el norte en la narrativa mexicana contemporánea" (Tierra Adentro/CONACULTA, 2012). Her work has appeared in journals such as "Hispanic Review", "Revista de Estudios Hispánicos", and "Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies". She has received research support from the Huntington Library, UC-Mexus, and the Chilean National Commission on Scientific and Technological Investigation.
At UC Irvine, Mahieux served as Director of Graduate Studies from 2013 to 2019 and again from 2020 to 2022, and as Interim Chair in 2024. She served as Chair of the UC-Mexus Advisory Board from 2016 to 2019. With Jacobo Sefamí, she has co-organized the annual Juan Bruce Novoa Mexican Studies Conference since 2012, which draws participants from Mexico, the United States, and Europe. Mahieux has directed multiple doctoral dissertations and has taught graduate seminars on topics including transatlantic avant-gardes, gender and revolution in Mexico, and media and the avant-garde.
