Research Physiologist, VA, Long Beach, CA

Biography

Veedamali S. Subramanian, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in Research-HCOMP at the University of California, Irvine. Subramanian received a Ph.D. in Immunogenetics from the University of Madras, India, and was awarded a gold medal for best Ph.D. thesis work by the university in 1996. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of vitamin transport in intestinal, lung, and neuronal cells, with particular emphasis on vitamins C, B1 (thiamine), and B2 (riboflavin).

Subramanian has served as principal investigator on multiple NIH grants, including an R01 examining the physiology and pathophysiology of intestinal vitamin C uptake and current R03 grants investigating vitamin C transport in Alzheimer's disease and nicotine-induced lung ailments. He also recently awarded VA Merit Review grant on vitamin C's role in modulating immune responses and intestinal inflammation. His work has elucidated how chronic alcohol exposure, inflammatory conditions, and bacterial infections affect vitamin transport processes, and has identified clinical mutations in vitamin transporter genes associated with neurological and systemic disorders.

Subramanian serves on the Institutional Animal Care Use Committees at both the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach and UC Irvine. Additionally, he also serves as a space committee member at UCI. He has been a member of the American Gastroenterological Association's abstract review committee since 2014 and served as councilor for the Obesity, Metabolism & Nutrition section from 2013 to 2023. He is also a member of the American Physiological Society's award committee for the Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology section. Subramanian has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and serves as a reviewer for numerous journals in physiology, cell biology, and nutrition.
