Luke Walls-Smith

Biography

Luke Walls-Smith, M.D., is HS Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Quality Improvement in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He completed his medical degree at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, followed by an emergency medicine residency at UCI Medical Center, where he served as Academic Chief Resident. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Emergency Department Administration and Operations at UCI Medical Center.

Walls-Smith's work centers on emergency department operations and quality improvement. In his administrative role, he has led a range of interdisciplinary initiatives including the development of clinical algorithms and emergent CT ordering, redesign of patient triage workflows, and implementation of remote cardiac monitoring technology. He serves on numerous hospital governance and operations committees and leads the UCI Emergency Department's Case Review Committee. He also serves as the Geriatric Emergency Department Physician Champion, overseeing site reaccreditation efforts.

Walls-Smith holds board certification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a member of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine and the American College of Emergency Physicians. His research spans emergency department operations, patient safety, and clinical care pathways. He is an active clinical teacher, supervising and instructing residents at UCI Medical Center.
