Warren F. Wiechmann
Biography
Warren F. Wiechmann, M.D., M.B.A., M.S.Ed., is Senior Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He also serves as Co-Director of the Physician Innovator Training Program. Wiechmann received his M.D. and M.B.A. from the University of California, Irvine, and completed his M.S.Ed. in Digital Age Learning and Educational Technology from Johns Hopkins School of Education. He completed his residency and fellowship training in emergency medicine and point-of-care ultrasound at UC Irvine.
As Senior Associate Dean, Wiechmann oversees the Office of Curricular Affairs and the Division of Educational Technology, which includes the Clinical Skills Center, Simulation Center, and Point of Care Ultrasound Institute, managing a team of over 30 faculty and staff and a budget exceeding $5 million. He chairs the Clinical Clerkship Directors Committee and conducts biannual reviews of clinical courses. Wiechmann has been instrumental in developing and implementing educational technology initiatives at UC Irvine, including the iMedEd Initiative, which has earned the School of Medicine recognition as an Apple Distinguished School for six consecutive award cycles. He is one of the founders of the Journal of Education and Teaching in Emergency Medicine and has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles on topics including medical education technology, emergency medicine, and point-of-care ultrasound.
Wiechmann also serves as the co-director for the Multimedia Design Education and Technology (MDEdTech) Fellowship in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Launched in 2014, the fellowship has graduated 13 physician educators who now serve in a variety of educational leadership roles in Emergency Medicine, Graduate Medical Education, and Undergraduate Medical Education.
Wiechmann has received multiple awards for his contributions to medical education, including the Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award from UC Irvine School of Medicine and the Medical Education Outstanding Leadership Award. He was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2013 and has been recognized as an Orange County Medical Association Physician of Excellence for seven consecutive years. Wiechmann serves on multiple national committees, including as institutional representative for the Association of American Medical Colleges Medical Education Senior Leadership Group and the University of California Medical Schools Curriculum Leadership Working Group. He is board certified in emergency medicine and clinical informatics.
