Biography
Yi Xi (Michael) Wu, Ph.D., is Assistant Professional Researcher in the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine. Wu focuses on establishing molecular research capabilities for the department, including expertise in next-generation sequencing, mass spectrometry, biochemistry, and analytical chemistry. His research spans urological conditions including bladder cancer detection, urinary incontinence mechanisms, and ureteral stent biomaterials.
Wu received his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of California, Irvine in 2020, where his doctoral work centered on developing a multiplex aptamer biosensor platform for bladder cancer detection using urine. Since joining the Department of Urology, he has contributed to over 20 peer-reviewed publications and has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2022 PMSE Best Poster Award at the National American Chemical Society meeting and selection for Top 10 Best Abstracts at the Annual Engineering and Urology Meeting in both 2022 and 2024.
Wu has secured or contributed to securing over $1.4 million in research funding, including serving as Multiple Principal Investigator on an ICTS Pilot Studies Award and contributing to successful NIH K08, NIH ISAC, and AUA Research Scholar Award applications. He has mentored numerous trainees including endourology fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers, and was recognized with an Honorable Mention for the 2025 School of Medicine Basic Science Faculty Mentor of the Year Award. Wu is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society of Basic Urologic Research, and the American Chemical Society.
