Zhaohui Liao Arter
Biography
Zhaohui (Ann) Liao Arter, M.D., is an Assistant Clinical Professor and Thoracic Oncologist in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Arter earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Nanjing Medical University in China, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and completed her Hematology and Oncology fellowship at UC Irvine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Arter specializes in thoracic malignancies, with a particular focus on precision oncology, molecularly targeted therapies, and early-phase clinical trials for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and other thoracic cancers. She serves as principal investigator on multiple industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trials evaluating novel therapies targeting Pan-RAS, TP53, HER2, ALK, ROS1, RET, and other actionable oncogenic alterations, as well as innovative immunotherapeutic approaches in lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. She also serves as sub-investigator on more than 30 clinical trials investigating targeted therapies, antibody-drug conjugates, bispecific antibodies, and immunotherapies for thoracic malignancies.
Her translational research focuses on oncogene-driven lung cancers, mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies, tumor mutation burden, and genomic characterization of rare molecular subsets. Dr. Arter has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and has presented her work at major international conferences including ASCO, AACR, ESMO, ELCC, and WCLC.
Dr. Arter serves on the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Early Career Development Committee and is an ad hoc reviewer for the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, NPJ Precision Oncology, Lung Cancer, and Therapeutic Advances in Medical Oncology. Her honors include the 2026 California Lung Cancer Coalition Research Award, 2025 and 2024 IASLC Education Awards, 2025 ESMO Merit Travel Grant, 2023 ASCO Conquer Cancer Merit Award, and multiple national and international research distinctions throughout her career.
