Biography
Zhiying Wang, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine. Wang received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2013 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University before joining UCI in 2015. Wang's research focuses on information theory and coding theory, with applications to data storage systems and distributed computing.
Wang has made contributions to coding for distributed storage systems, including work on regenerating codes, MDS array codes, and repair bandwidth optimization. More recently, Wang's research has expanded to include coding for DNA-based data storage, private information retrieval, and age of information in communication networks. Wang received the NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award in 2023 for work on coding for composite DNA storage.
Wang has supervised six graduated Ph.D. students and mentored numerous master's and undergraduate students. Wang has taught both undergraduate required courses in probability and signals and systems, as well as graduate courses in information storage and coding theory. Wang has served on technical program committees for IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory and IEEE International Conference on Communications, and has been a reviewer for multiple IEEE transactions and journals.
