Zicheng Wang
Associate Specialist, Department of Earth System Science
Biography
Zicheng Wang, Ph.D., is an Associate Specialist in the Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine. Wang received a Ph.D. in Marine Chemistry from Ocean University of China, where his dissertation examined phytoplankton productivity and community structure variations in the East China Sea during the Holocene. He also holds an M.Sc. in Marine Chemistry from the First Institute of Oceanography, MNR, where his research focused on distributions and biological production rates of DMS and DMSP in the Pacific sector of the Arctic.
Wang is a MICADAS specialist with over seven years of experience operating and maintaining radiocarbon dating systems for high precision ¹⁴C analysis. From 2019 to 2024, he worked at Ocean University of China, where he established protocols for routine radiocarbon analysis of environmental samples. He received specialized training for operation of the MICADAS and its multiple accompanied devices at IonPlus AG in Switzerland. Between April 2022 and July 2024, Wang served as a part-time consultant for IonPlus China Support, providing technical assistance to institutions including the Institute of Archaeology of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, University of Tianjin, University of Lanzhou, and University of Henan.
Since joining UC Irvine in 2024, Wang has contributed to the optimization of the newly installed Terra-MICADAS system at the KCCAMS facility. His work focuses on providing high precision radiocarbon measurements, improving CO₂ and graphite target preparation, and developing QA/QC protocols for radiocarbon measurements to support research in climate change and air quality. Wang has published research on MICADAS performance and Holocene phytoplankton dynamics, and has contributed to studies on organic carbon cycling in river-estuary-coastal systems and deep ocean environments.
