Biography

Zachary E. Tano, M.D., is Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of the Center for Kidney Stone Disease at Staten Island University Hospital, Zucker School of Medicine at Northwell Health, and Project Scientist in the Department of Urology at the University of California, Irvine. Tano completed his endourology fellowship at the University of California, Irvine, where he trained under Drs. Ralph Clayman and Jaime Landman, and his urology residency at New York University Langone Medical Center. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and holds a Master in Business Administration from the University of Hawaii and a B.S. in General Engineering from the United States Naval Academy.

Tano's research focuses on medical device development, ureteral biomechanics, and pharmacologic interventions for urologic applications. He has developed three patents related to urologic devices and led translational investigations that resulted in 100% abstract acceptance rates at multiple international conferences. His work includes developing force sensors for safe ureteral access sheath placement, investigating electromotive drug administration for ureteral dilation, and utilizing computer modeling to optimize device designs prior to manufacturing. Prior to his urology training, Tano spent three years as a research fellow in the thoracic surgery department at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he investigated chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy and developed an immunocompetent culture system to study CAR T-cell cytotoxicity in various tumor microenvironments.

Tano served in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps from 2002 to 2006, including deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was responsible for planning and executing infrastructure projects for the Afghan National Police. He received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his military service. Tano has authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications with an h-index of 9 and has contributed chapters to multiple textbooks including Hinman's Atlas of Urologic Surgery and Sugarbaker's Adult Chest Surgery.
